About Kathleen Kenneally
Statement of Personal Philosophy and Curriculum Vitae
Healing involves the body, mind, spirit and emotions. Within each symptom lie the seeds for recovery and personal growth. I use Traditional Chinese Medicine and Somatic Experiencing®, the acupuncture meridian system and the nervous system, to open a door for change.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches that health is about balance. TCM is an energetic medicine that uses the acupuncture meridians to tonify, sedate, or harmonize to rebalance the body's flows of energy or qi. Herbs, lifestyle changes, tui na (a manual therapy), moxibustion (warming herb used on the skin), gua sha (a scraping technique) are all used along with very thin threadlike acupuncture needles to move and stimulate qi. The needles are not painful. The treatment can be curative. Balancing the energetics of the body can reduce pain, increase circulation and stimulate the body to use its own propensities to heal.
Somatic Experiencing® is a short term naturalistic approach to healing trauma. It is a very gentle way of verbally tracking internal body sensations (i.e. warmth, cold, tightness and looseness) to increase awareness and subsequently through pedulation restore the functioning of the nervous system. Remembering all that the nervous system controls, it becomes clear why rebalancing its tonicity would reduce a wide range of symptoms.
My approaches are gentle and are organized so that the patient has a sense that recovery is manageable. Any illness one would consult a medical doctor about can be brought to an Acupuncturist for adjunctive treatment. Comfort and safety in an acupuncture session are stepping stones to creating the optimal relationship between patient and practitioner. I spend the entire session time, usually fifty minutes, with patients. Typically, after a short intake, the patient receives acupuncture and we begin Somatic Experiencing® or another modality. I usually see patients once a week while they are in treatment. After about six sessions the patient and practitioner evaluate whether or not the treatment is effective. After each acupuncture session, patients typically say they feel rejuvenated and relaxed.
